Your Host

Your host, Malcolm Brack, has had a life-long love affair with Cape Otway – he’s passionate about the natural environment, wildlife, bushwalking and the district’s heritage.

His local knowledge is unsurpassed, and Malcolm loves to ensure his guests have the best experience of the Cape and the Otways. Creating tailor-made itineraries to suit the interests and skills of clients is one of his specialities.

Malcolm happily provides advice on the best scenic drives, great walks, top swimming spots, and the best bird & wildlife spotting points.

He loves watching Humpback and Southern Right whales from vantage points on his property and always keeps his guests posted on the activities of these giant sea mammals between May and October as they pass through Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean.

Malcolm has also been the local weatherman for 18 years. Twice daily he takes readings and makes observations for the Bureau of Meteorology at Cape Otway Lightstation. So when you’re back home and hear news of the weather at Cape Otway – rest assured, Malcolm’s involved.

The son of a lightkeeper, Malcolm spent his early childhood at Gabo Island and Wilson’s Promontory lighthouses before moving to Cape Otway Lightstation with his family at the age of eight.

Malcolm was the third eldest of 10 children, and loves to tell stories of his childhood adventures – swimming in Bass Strait, catching crayfish, sledging down grass hills and exhilarating races in homemade billy carts.

Wildlife

If you’d like to get up close to some of Australia’s most exciting species of wildlife Cape Otway Ocean Lodge is the place for you.

The property is alive with koalas and echidnas, in fact there are so many koalas we guarantee you’ll see them. Occasionally they call in at The Lodge, as if to say hello!

Eastern Grey Kangaroos and three species of wallaby are also regularly seen on the property, and there are great whale-spotting vantage points plus more than 70 varieties of birds.

The largest bird seen is the Wedge-Tailed Eagle and perhaps the smallest is the beautiful and delicate Superb Fairy Wren, with the males in their striking azure plumage during the breeding season.

Resident parrot species include Crimson Rosellas, King Parrots, and Blue-Winged parrots.

Iconic Australian species of birds such as Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos, Yellow-Tailed Black Cockatoos and kookaburras are regularly seen too.

Spotlighting at night is a great way to see nocturnal species such as possums.

The abundant mammal and birdlife on our property keeps lots of our guests fully occupied, but of course we’re right on the doorstep of the Great Otway National Park and the Great Ocean Walk where you can see a whole lot more.
