Cape Otway

Cape Otway is a natural mecca for people who love the great outdoors.

At the Cape you can explore manna gum forests where you’re guaranteed to see koalas, and there are several species of wallaby, possums and dozens of species of birdlife. Between May and October humpback and southern right whales are seen almost daily in the waters off the Cape.

A short drive from the Lodge is Maits Rest, a beautiful patch of rainforest with giant tree-ferns, mossy undergrowth and huge trees – all accessible on a wooden boardwalk.

One of the great ways to explore the diverse landscapes of Cape Otway is to take on sections of the Great Ocean Walk, or enjoy a horse-back trail ride down to Station Beach. Get off the beaten track with a walk to Rainbow Falls where the waters tumble 30m down sheer cliff faces to the ocean. Or walk to Parker River where lighthouse supply boats once unloaded their precious cargo.

We can direct you to isolated beaches, shipwrecks, top fishing spots, and give advice on where to see glow worms.

Great food, lots of laughs. Learnt a lot from Malcolm. The fire & hot showers were so nice after a day’s walk.

Cape Otway Lightstation

Cape Otway Lightstation, the most significant lighthouse on mainland Australia, is located within 1km of Cape Otway Ocean Lodge.

From the deck of the 1848 lighthouse, experience the heart-pounding thrill and awe-inspiring views from 80m above the Southern Ocean. It’s perfect for whale-spotting from May to October.

Make the most of the heritage precinct and appreciate local Aboriginal culture. Visit the restored Telegraph Station, built in 1859.

Discover the Cape’s secret war history. A World War Two Radar Bunker was built in 1942 after a US ship was sunk by a German mine off the Cape.

Children love the Lightstation’s school activity program and you can download the fun KIDZONE activity pack.

In the 1840s the Lightstation was a welcome sight for European immigrants who’d spent three months at sea. Today visitors enjoy the architecture, history, wildlife spotting, peace, tranquillity, remote beauty and delicious food. The Lightstation is open every day, except Christmas day, for self-guided tours, Shipwreck Discovery tours, good food and coffee.

The Otway Fly

The Otway Fly Tree Top Walk & Café, near Beech Forest, is a private development set on 85 hectares of land deep in the heart of the Otways old growth forest, bordering the Great Otway National Park.

The Otway Fly is a 600m long, 25m high elevated tree top walk ascending at a gentle grade through a magnificent stand of cool temperate rainforest featuring Myrtle Beech, Blackwood and Mountain Ash. From this height you experience a unique, close view of the flora and fauna of the rainforest. Before you know it you are staring out above the tops of some trees and there are also some spectacular stands of ferns to look down on.

For the thrill seeker a 45m high lookout is ascended via a spiral stairway through the understorey to emerge amongst the crowns of the giants of the forest. And there’s the springboard cantilever which bounces gently, high over picturesque Young’s Creek.

Great Otway National Park

The Great Otway National Park covers 103,000 hectares and showcases why the Otways is such a world-class eco-tourism destination.

The park includes ancient rainforests, tall wet forests, diverse heathlands and woodlands flanked by spectacular coastlines, pristine beaches, breath-taking coastal cliffs, wetlands, lazy river systems, and stunning waterfalls.

One of the big attractions of the national park is the Great Ocean Walk, a 91km, 8-day walk which begins in the resort town of Apollo Bay and ends near the 12 Apostles.

The walk was designed so that walkers could step on and off the trail at a number of places, completing short, day or overnight hikes. Cape Otway Ocean Lodge is just metres from the walk and is a favourite destination for bushwalking groups.
